High-Performance Beef Programme at Every Stage of Production
Suckler Cow
While the majority of suckler herds are predominantly grazing based, there are times when it is beneficial to feed these cattle more than grass. As the source of animals going into the finishing pen, it is important they calve easily, healthily and regularly – once a year with minimal health intervention.
The following should be considered to ensure success:
Mineral Status and Nutritional Plane
Just as important in pregnant beef cattle as dairy cattle, Agri-King can formulate rations for calving, which in most cases tends to be when they are housed over winter.
Nutrition for Milk Production
In spring, when the cows have calves at foot, adequate nutrition for milk production must be considered. Regular testing of grazed grass helps to ensure cows are getting everything they need to rear their offspring.
Pre Service Rations
A buffer ration can be formulated to address extra energy requirements and compliment grazed grass in pre service cattle. In natural service herds, a buffer ration for service bull can help to ensure optimum condition before work.
Youngstock
Following the advent of beef on dairy breeding it has become evident there are two classes of animal in this stage. In the UK, a bigger proportion of the national beef herd is originating from the dairy herd every year.
The nutritional needs of youngstock should consider the following:
Accurate Nutrition
Weaned suckler calves have their nutritional needs met from their mothers until at least 6 months old, but accurate youngstock nutrition can make the finishing period and meat production more successful and profitable.
Protein and Fortification
For beef calves coming from the dairy herd, supplying enough protein during development alongside fortification means the correct balance of nutrients can be found. This uses feed efficiently, maintains health and sets up the finishing period.
Optimising First Stages of Growth
The most feed efficient stages of growth should be optimised to maximise profit. Youngstock grown well and healthily at this stage means straightforward nutritional requirements during the finishing period.
